The American League's best player of the week was Seattle's Kirk Rueter, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Kirk went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.12, while fanning 18 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .169 against Kirk this season. While posting an ERA of 1.95 he went 4-1 in 6 starts, fanning 39 and walking 7 hitters. Kirk has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Morgan Ensberg, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is California's John Smiley. He started 5 games in April, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.47 in 38 innings. John fanned 23 hitters. John also fired a shutout. John Smoltz couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 0.45 in 20 innings of work in which he struck out 38 hitters. His record in April is 3-0.
Sunday 5/1/2001: Jones (CAL) and Clark (CHN) win monthly award
Chipper Jones of California wins his 4th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. Chipper was on fire, hitting .306 with 10 homeruns and 19 RBI. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Tony Clark this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Clark helped his team with an average of .337 and 32 RBI in 98 at bats.
Friday 4/29/2001: Kenny Lofton ropes 2000th career hit
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Kenny Lofton showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Toronto on Friday. With one out in the 2nd inning, Kenny drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 11 years of big league action so far, Kenny has compiled a batting average of .297, along with 53 homeruns and 732 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!'
Wednesday 4/27/2001: Arizona's Bross out for 6 weeks
ARIZONA - Arizona's right-hander Terry Bross suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 11th of the game against San Diego he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Terry has a record of 2-0 this season, with an ERA of 0.00. In 10.2 Innings he was able to strike out 13 batters.
Tuesday 4/26/2001: 5-hit performance by Seattle's Mike B. Young
SEATTLE - Seattle's second baseman Mike B. Young once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Oakland's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 353 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 2nd hit was a RBI double off Scott Chiamparino in the 3rd inning. His 5th hit, a three-run homerun off Ben McDonald in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 447 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 5th and in the 6th . Mike B. scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .326. The final score of the game was 18-0.
Tuesday 4/26/2001: Garret Anderson (KCR) will miss 5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's rightfielder Garret Anderson hurt himself in the 4th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Garret Anderson will miss at least 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Anderson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Herniated Disc Back. While compiling an on base percentage of .333, Garret hit .261 and slugged .348. He has collected 8 runs batted in this year.
