Monday 5/23/2001: Luis A. Rivera collects six hits against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Detroit's shortstop Luis A. Rivera once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Monday. A pitch from Wayne Franklin in the 9th inning left his bat for a RBI double. He collected singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) , in the 2nd (two RBIs) , in the 3rd inning , in the 4th inning (one RBI) and in the 5th inning . Luis A. scored 2 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 57 hits in 174 at bats, resulting in a .328 batting average. Detroit improved its record to 26-21, scoring 28 runs on 25 hits.
Monday 5/23/2001: Thomas (CHA) and Beltran (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Frank E. Thomas from Chicago (A) wins his 9th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Frank E. was on fire, hitting .409 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. This year Thomas drove in 28 and scored 31 runs while batting .316 with 12 longballs. He's 5th in the American League in batting! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Cincinnati's Carlos Beltran this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Beltran helped his team with an average of .440 and 10 RBI in 25 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Carlos has gone 43 for 181 (.238) this season, hitting 10 longballs and driving in 25 runs. He has scored 26 runs on his own.
Sunday 5/22/2001: Chicago (N)'s Brian S. Giles has great day, hits three longballs
CHICAGO (N) - Brian S. Giles was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Chicago (N) to a 8-2 win over Pittsburgh by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Calvin Jones in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Number 2 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 326 feet, cleared the wall in right field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Wilson Heredia. Overall he went 3 for 4, scoring three times with 5 RBI.
Saturday 5/21/2001: Jim Neidlinger fires 2-hitter against Texas
TORONTO - Jim Neidlinger had some fun again. Texas hitters did not. Toronto's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 334 games started. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Neidlinger (5-3) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 81 of 132 pitches for strikes. Moises Alou provided Toronto with the offense Neidlinger needed as he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, homering once, and driving in 4 runs. Toronto scored 6 runs on 11 hits.
