Thursday 6/2/2001: Chan Ho Park pitches 2-hit shutout against St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - Milwaukee's right-hander Chan Ho Park is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking St. Louis on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. Park (10-2) struck out an astounding 14 and walked none, throwing 71 of 111 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' David Dellucci provided Milwaukee with the offense Park needed as he got 2 hits in 3 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Milwaukee improved its record to 38-17, scoring 7 runs on 8 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2001: Martinez (BOS) and Park (MIL) win monthly pitcher award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Boston's Pedro Martinez. His ERA of just 0.88 helped him to a 4-1 record in May. He worked 51 innings, striking out 52 hitters while walking 11. Pedro also fired a shutout. In 12 starts this year Pedro struck out 90 batters in 96 innings of work. His ERA is 3.09, his record 5-4. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. Milwaukee's Chan Ho Park had a terrific May, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.11 in 48.2 innings of work in which he struck out 45 hitters. His record in May is 5-0. Chan Ho fired two shutouts! Chan Ho has a record of 9-2 this season, with an ERA of 1.58. In 96.2 Innings he was able to strike out 105 batters. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Carl Everett, Cleveland's starting centerfielder. Carl was on fire, hitting .333 with 8 homeruns and 26 RBI. This year Everett drove in 40 and scored 36 runs while batting .311 with 11 bombs. He's 7th in the American League in batting and 8th in RBI! Shawn Green of Cincinnati wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He hit .317 with 28 RBI and slugged .733 in 101 at bats. His season numbers are: .320 AVG, 63 hits, 19 doubles, 3 triples and 14 bombs, along with 47 RBI and 44 runs scored. He's 10th in the National League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 5th in RBI!
Monday 5/30/2001: Detroit's Rivera wins Player of the Week award
It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's shortstop Luis A. Rivera. Luis A. went 13 for 25 (.520), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 13 RBI. Shawn Green from Cincinnati wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .421 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.316 in 19 at bats.
Friday 5/27/2001: Robb Nen pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
CLEVELAND - Robb Nen took the mound and never left. And Cleveland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 295 games started. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Nen (10-1) fanned 9 and walked none, throwing 118 pitches. Minnesota's centerfielder Lance Johnson got 3 hits in 5 AB, stroking a double, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nen. Minnesota improved its record to 37-13, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits.
Wednesday 5/25/2001: Brian Schneider stars with cycle against Baltimore
BALTIMORE - Oakland's catcher Brian Schneider accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Baltimore, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .247! A single in the 2nd off Shane Reynolds accounted for his 1st hit. A three-run triple off Terry Adams in the 2nd inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 398 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. In the 9th inning he belted a two-run double off Manny Aybar. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Brian scored 3 runs, and he collected 7 RBI as well! He is hitting .203 this season, with 2 HR and 16 RBI. He's now the 109th player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 9/15/2000, Vladimir Guerrero was the last player to hit for the cycle.
