Wednesday 6/8/2001: Omar Vizquel (HOU) will miss 5 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's season took a blow when Omar Vizquel suffered a serious injury in the game against Philadelphia. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Vizquel will probaby miss 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Tricep Muscle which will require surgery. This year Vizquel drove in 15 and scored 23 runs while batting .244 with no homeruns.
Tuesday 6/7/2001: Chan Ho Park dominates San Francisco, gives up just one hit
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander Chan Ho Park is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Francisco on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Paul Bako singled with one out in the 8th inning. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Park (11-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. Matt Walbeck provided Milwaukee with the offense Park needed as he finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun, scoring twice. Milwaukee improved its record to 41-19, scoring 5 runs on 8 hits.
Tuesday 6/7/2001: Kansas City's Appier out for full season
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Kevin Appier experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Baltimore, Appier complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Kansas City wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Appier had suffered a Torn Ligament Elbow. Opposing players hit .330 against Kevin this season. While posting an ERA of 5.27 he went 3-2 in 1 starts, fanning 15 and walking 12 hitters.
Monday 6/6/2001: Los Angeles (N)'s Gonzalez wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Toronto's Moises Alou this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .467, while driving in 9 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Alou has hit for a .310 average this season. He has 19 extra base hits along with 96 total bases, resulting in a .480 slugging percentage. He's 7th in the American League in batting! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Juan Gonzalez, Los Angeles (N)'s starting leftfielder. He had an on base percentage of .600 and hit .571, while driving in 4 runs.
Saturday 6/4/2001: Jeff Shaw out for 5-6 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Jeff Shaw suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 8th of the game against San Francisco he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. San Diego wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Shaw had suffered a Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Jeff has a record of 3-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.45. In 36.2 Innings he was able to strike out 21 batters.
Saturday 6/4/2001: Butch Henry out for full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's southpaw Butch Henry experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 4th inning of the game against Seattle, Henry complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Ruptured Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .257 against Butch this season. While posting an ERA of 3.61 he went 5-5 in 12 starts, fanning 41 and walking 12 hitters.
