Friday 6/17/2001: Randy D. Johnson shuts out Minnesota on 2 hits
MINNESOTA - Age doesn't matter. At least Boston's lefty Randy D. Johnson shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Minnesota, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Johnson (8-4) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. Johnny Damon provided Boston with the offense Johnson needed as he finished 3 for 5, homering twice, doubling once, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Wednesday 6/15/2001: Bobby Abreu stars with cycle against Montreal
MONTREAL - Milwaukee's centerfielder Bobby Abreu accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Montreal, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .263! A single in the 2nd off Gabe Molina accounted for his 1st hit. In the 5th inning he belted a RBI double off Jim Mecir. In the 8th inning he unloaded a two-run triple off Matt Ruebel. His 4th hit, off Matt Ruebel in the 9th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bobby did drive in 6 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .249. He's now the 110th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Brian Schneider was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/25/2001.
Wednesday 6/15/2001: Chicago (A)'s Alvarez severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s left-hander Wilson Alvarez will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Oakland on Wednesday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Wilson has a record of 8-3 this season, with an ERA of 3.39. In 103.2 Innings he was able to strike out 97 batters. He has 3 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in wins!
Tuesday 6/14/2001: Jason Schmidt dominates San Francisco, gives up just 2 hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Jason Schmidt had some fun again. San Francisco hitters did not. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 143 games started. Schmidt (7-3) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 106 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Carlos Ruiz helped Schmidt at the plate, he went 2 for 3, homering once, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 6/13/2001: Chicago (N)'s Glaus wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's third baseman Robin Ventura had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Robin pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .444 with 2 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .778. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 12 game hitting streak right now. His season features a batting average of .329 (77 hits in 234 AB), 16 doubles, 2 triples and 13 bombs. Ventura collected 46 RBI and 43 runs as well. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Troy Glaus, Chicago (N)'s starting third baseman. In 20 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 7 RBI.
Saturday 6/11/2001: Cincinnati's Rupe severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Ryan Rupe suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 4 weeks. In the 7th of the game against Philadelphia he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Rupe compiled an ERA of 4.80, going 4-3 in 13 starts. He fanned 59 while giving up 113 hits in 86.1 innings. Ryan has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
