Tuesday 7/12/2001: Fred McGriff out for 6 weeks
ATLANTA - Atlanta's first baseman Fred McGriff will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, McGriff was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Foot. This year McGriff drove in 57 and scored 48 runs while batting .284 with 19 taters.
Monday 7/11/2001: Young and Jose win Player of the Week award
Detroit's centerfielder Dmitri Young had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Dmitri went 8 for 17 (.471), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 6 RBI. Dmitri has gone 76 for 296 (.257) this season, hitting 21 homeruns and driving in 49 runs. He has scored 55 runs on his own. It's the 5th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Florida's rightfielder Felix Jose. In 16 at bats he hit .563 with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
Saturday 7/9/2001: Brad Fullmer hits for the cycle against San Francisco
ST. LOUIS - Brad Fullmer hits 'em where they ain't. San Francisco certainly agrees as St. Louis' third baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A single in the 4th off Bob Wolcott accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 377 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Number 3 in the 7th inning accounted for a double. A RBI triple off Jason Frasor in the 9th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Brad scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .255. He becomes the 111st player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 6/15/2001, Bobby Abreu was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Thursday 7/7/2001: Texas' Walker severely injured
TEXAS - Texas' leftfielder Larry Walker will miss about 5-6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 2nd inning of the game between Texas and Toronto. He dove for a drive off the bat of Gary Sheffield, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Texas wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Walker had suffered a Herniated Disc Back. Larry has gone 88 for 300 (.293) this season, hitting 7 bombs and driving in 47 runs. He has scored 57 runs on his own.
