Monday 7/18/2001: Kansas City's Snow out for full season
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's first baseman J.T. Snow will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Kansas City and Minnesota. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Snow collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Thigh Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Snow has hit for a .251 average this season. He has 32 extra base hits along with 128 total bases, resulting in a .412 slugging percentage.
Monday 7/18/2001: Colbrunn (CLE) and Hill (SFG) win P.O.W. award
Greg Colbrunn wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Greg pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .435 with 4 HR and 7 RBI while slugging 1.000. His season numbers are: .252 AVG, 80 hits, 16 doubles, one triple and 10 longballs, along with 39 RBI and 35 runs scored. Glenallen Hill wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .542 and hit .522, while driving in 7 runs.
Sunday 7/17/2001: Philadelphia's Byrd out for 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's right-hander Paul Byrd will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Byrd had suffered a Ruptured Tricep Tendon. His ERA of 5.43 helped him to a 4-12 record this year. He struck out 87 and walked 25 in 109.1 innings.
Friday 7/15/2001: Mike Poehl turns in great performance against Tampa Bay
TAMPA BAY - Mike Poehl had some fun again. Tampa Bay hitters did not. Seattle's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 11 career shutouts in 336 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Poehl (9-5) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. Jay Buhner provided Seattle with the offense Poehl needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting two dingers, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Wednesday 7/13/2001: Texas has no chance in a 2-hitter by Gary Eave
TEXAS - Age doesn't matter. At least Detroit's right-hander Gary Eave shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Texas, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Eave (8-8) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 4, throwing 117 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Russell Branyan provided Detroit with the offense Eave needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, hitting a double. Detroit scored 2 runs on 7 hits.
