Wednesday 7/27/2001: Stan Belinda (TOR) will miss 5 weeks
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander Stan Belinda will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 9th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 3.38 helped him to a 2-2 record this year. He struck out 40 and walked 13 in 34.2 innings.
Tuesday 7/26/2001: Cincinnati's Ordonez out for full season
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's rightfielder Magglio Ordonez will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Ordonez collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Thigh Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Ordonez has hit for a .341 average this season. He has 33 extra base hits along with 174 total bases, resulting in a .478 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Monday 7/25/2001: Atlanta's Boone wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was California's Esteban German, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Aaron Boone this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .667 and hit .591, while driving in 12 runs. Aaron is hitting .297 this year, with 94 hits in 317 at bats. He has driven in 57 runs, slugging .498.
Saturday 7/23/2001: Robb Nen pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
MINNESOTA - Robb Nen took the mound and never left. And Toronto hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 301 games started. Nen (14-2) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 76 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Minnesota's designated hitter Melvin Nieves finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nen. Minnesota improved its record to 71-26, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
