Well baseball fans, here we are closing out the end of July marking the end of the fourth month of the 2001 season with just 61 games left in the season to see which teams get the chance to start the fairy tale journey to the end of October.
Since we last checked in on the state of the league, many a day has passed but has it really changed?
Finally in the East, we have the other elder team the BlueJays looking to make another run, but both Baltimore and Boston want to see a new team on top. Will be fun to see how the division plays out.
BlueJays have a commanding lead in the worst division in Baseball. It looks like 81 wins would probably win the AL east at this point. Boston somehow is tanking once again and might end up with a top 10 pick. Tampa Bay after thinking they drafted a playoff contending team in the expansion draft is looking to just win 55 to bolster it's chances of jumping in the lottery, and looks to be in full rebuild mode.
Over in the Central, the "rebuilding" Twins are in first, with of course the White Sox nippin at their heals with the second best AL record (tied). The main shock here is that Detroit is sub 500 after winning over 100 games last year. Not sure what is going on in D town.
Out in the West, Cali is in first place, but for the first time in forever they haven't won the West on the first 20 games. Seattle is only one game back, and looking to make the west contested, but odds are Cali is basically the same team as last year that won 120, so it'll be hard for Seattle to dethrone them. Looking forward to seeing if the West will actually be contested.
In between it looked like Seattle might have surprised everyone and was going to dethrone Cali for the West title, as inexplicably the Angels just were not winning. Darryl seems to have fixed whatever was wrong and they have charged back and taken a 7 game lead over Seattle.
Out in the NL West, the Dodgers seem to be offended by Atlanta setting the single season win record last season, and they want to not only break it but obliterate it. They have started 18-2 and that has them on pace to win 145 games. Colorado, is starting to make some noise also, and might be fighting for a spot in the off season once it is all said and done.
The incredible start by the LA guys has cooled... A LOT, and currently they will make the playoffs only because the West is weak. They have the fifth best record in the NL. Colorado is having a good season, but not quite ready to challenge for the lead.
Over in the Central, Milwaukee isn't starting the season in a slumber, unlike last season, and also is 15-5 and is holding off currently a charge from the Cubs who look to be trying to be awakening from the hibernation they've been in the last few seasons. This will be an interesting division to watch as StL also seems to be looking to compete again.
The season has started and the Braves have surged to an early lead in the East winning three out of every four games, holding a five game advantage over the second place Marlins. How many more seasons can they continue this kind of year in and year out success? The Braves must be the oldest team out there with 6 starters that are 37, and 12 of the 25 on the MLB roster at 35 or older. One really has to wonder how much longer the Braves can maintain the stranglehold on the East. The Marlins seem to have started a little flat, but as good as that team is, it wont last for long.
