The American League Player of the Week award goes to Paul McClellan, one of California's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.51 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .211 against Paul this season. While posting an ERA of 2.25 he went 16-3 in 23 starts, fanning 130 and walking 37 hitters. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Albert Belle this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Saturday 8/6/2001: Atlanta's Dibble out for 8-9 weeks
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Rob Dibble suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 8-9 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Florida he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Dibble was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Elbow Ligament. In 0 starts this year Rob struck out 51 batters in 45 innings of work. His ERA is 1.20, his record 1-3.
Wednesday 8/3/2001: Pittsburgh's Albert Pujols slams five hits
PITTSBURGH - Albert Pujols hits 'em where they ain't. Arizona certainly agrees as Pittsburgh's third baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A pitch from Guillermo Mota in the 2nd inning left his bat for a two-run triple. His 3rd hit, a three-run homerun off Guillermo Mota in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 443 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 7th and in the 8th . Albert scored 4 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .296. The final score of the game was 27-1.
Monday 8/1/2001: John Smoltz has done it, earns 300th win
CHICAGO (N) - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. He struck out 3 and walked one earned run. Over 7 innings he allowed one earned run and 4 hits. He has enmassed 3476 K's in 3713 career innings so far, and posts a 2.04 lifetime ERA. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' He has won 20 games 9 times in his career, setting a career high with 27 wins in 1996. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it.

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Vinny Castilla, Toronto's starting second baseman. Vinny was on fire, hitting .542 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Matt Walbeck, Milwaukee's starting catcher. He hit .522 with 10 RBI and slugged .870 in 23 at bats. Matt managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. His season numbers are: .349 AVG, 127 hits, 12 doubles, one triple and 17 bombs, along with 76 RBI and 63 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting!

It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Minnesota's pitcher Brad Radke. His ERA of just 0.77 helped him to a 3-0 record in July. He worked 35 innings, striking out 8 hitters while walking 11. Brad has a record of 3-0 this season, with an ERA of 1.74. In 46.2 Innings he was able to strike out 12 batters. John Smoltz pitched like a legend in July, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 0.63 in 43 innings of work in which he struck out 55 hitters. His record in July is 5-0. John fired two shutouts! John has a record of 11-1 this season, with an ERA of 0.93. CLEVELAND - Cleveland's centerfielder Carl Everett will miss at least 8 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Groin Muscle. He has hit 22 longballs while batting .262 this season. His 98 hits and 35 walks add up to a .343 on-base percentage.
