Matt Holliday wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .538 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 26 at bats. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Brad Wilkerson, Chicago (N)'s starting centerfielder. Wilkerson helped his team with an average of .591 and 4 RBI in 22 at bats.
Sunday 8/21/2001: Mike Poehl shuts out Boston on 2 hits
BOSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Seattle's right-hander Mike Poehl. Boston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. Manny Ramirez spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with two outs in the 7th inning. Poehl (13-6) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 101 pitches. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Lance Berkman helped Poehl at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, homering once, stroking a double, scoring two runs and driving in 4 runs. The final score of the game was 14-0.
