Wednesday 9/7/2001: Toronto's Gary Sheffield gets the cycle
OAKLAND - Gary Sheffield led Toronto to a 9-8 win over Oakland by squeezing five hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A single in the 1st off Bryan Hickerson accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 2nd inning accounted for a double. Hit number 3 followed in the 6th inning, a triple. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. A pitch from Scot Shields in the 13th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 434 feet from home plate in center field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Gary did drive in one while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .270. He becomes the 112nd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 7/9/2001, Brad Fullmer was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Monday 9/5/2001: Milwaukee's Sosa wins Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Tampa Bay's first baseman Paul Konerko. Paul went 10 for 23 (.435), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 8 RBI. This year Konerko drove in 74 and scored 62 runs while batting .253 with 26 homeruns. It's the 6th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Milwaukee's rightfielder Sammy Sosa. Sammy was on fire, hitting .667 with 4 HR and 6 RBI.

NEW YORK (N) - When it rains, it pours. New York (N)'s right-hander Jose Melendez will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Florida where he left the field in the 4th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Melendez was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. In 28 starts this year Jose struck out 152 batters in 173.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.46, his record 7-16.

CINCINNATI - On Friday, Milwaukee's rightfielder Sammy Sosa displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Cincinnati, punishing their pitchers with five hits. In the 4th inning he belted a double off Bob Wickman. A 416 foot drive to right field marked his 4th hit, a solo homerun off Scott Eyre in the 6th inning. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Ramiro Mendoza in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He collected singles in the 1st and in the 3rd inning . Sammy did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 180 hits in 528 at bats, resulting in a .341 batting average. Milwaukee improved its record to 104-32, scoring 13 runs on 22 hits.
