Monday 4/25/2002: Edmonds and Utley win Player of the Week award
Jim Edmonds wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Jim went 10 for 24 (.417), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 6 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. This year Edmonds drove in 21 and scored 15 runs while batting .304 with 7 taters. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns! Chase Utley from Houston wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Chase went 13 for 23 (.565), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 11 RBI.
Sunday 4/24/2002: Seattle's Gonzalez out for 8 weeks
SEATTLE - When it rains, it pours. Seattle's left-hander Mike V. Gonzalez will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Oakland where he left the field in the 10th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Elbow which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .263 against Mike V. this season. While posting an ERA of 3.48 he went 1-2 in 0 starts, fanning 9 and walking 5 hitters.
Sunday 4/24/2002: Alberto Reyes out for 8 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Alberto Reyes suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Reyes had suffered a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Alberto has a record of 3-2 this season, with an ERA of 1.38. In 13 Innings he was able to strike out 12 batters. He's 3rd in the American League in wins!
Saturday 4/23/2002: Mike Poehl (SEA) will miss 5 weeks
SEATTLE - Seattle is without its right-hander Mike Poehl for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Corey Koskie in a game against Oakland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Tricep Muscle which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .176 against Mike this season. While posting an ERA of 1.93 he went 1-1 in 4 starts, fanning 21 and walking 3 hitters.
Friday 4/22/2002: Colorado's Jaha severely injured
COLORADO - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Colorado's first baseman John Jaha will miss about 5 weeks after being hit by Ryan Vogelsong in the 4th inning of the game between Colorado and San Francisco. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Cheekbone which will require surgery. His season numbers are: .173 AVG, 9 hits, 3 doubles, no triples and one bomb, along with 2 RBI and 6 runs scored.
Tuesday 4/19/2002: Tom Gordon blanks San Francisco with a 2-hitter
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Tom Gordon is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Francisco found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Gordon 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 8th shutouts in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Gordon (3-0) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 71 of 111 pitches for strikes. Andujar Cedeno provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Gordon needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 5 runs. Los Angeles (N) scored 9 runs on 7 hits.
Tuesday 4/19/2002: Chris Carpenter quiets Oakland bats with shutout
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Chris Carpenter is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Carpenter (2-1) struck out 7 and walked 1, throwing 62 of 93 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Kansas City was third baseman Jason Giambi, he went 2 for 5, going deep twice, scoring twice and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Monday 4/18/2002: Montreal's Stairs wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Tampa Bay's Gary Sheffield, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. Sheffield helped his team with an average of .391 and 8 RBI in 23 at bats. Gary has gone 23 for 59 (.390) this season, hitting 8 homeruns and driving in 19 runs. He has scored 14 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Matt Stairs from Montreal wins his 12th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .654 and hit .609, while driving in 11 runs. Stairs has hit for a .438 average this season. He has 7 extra base hits along with 34 total bases, resulting in a .708 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 1st in RBI!
