Monday 5/2/2002: Philadelphia's Nied severely injured
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander David Nied suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 7th of the game against Houston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. David has a record of 2-2 this season, with an ERA of 4.30. In 37.2 Innings he was able to strike out 26 batters.
Monday 5/2/2002: Hideo Nomo blanks Cincinnati with a 1-hitter
CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Hideo Nomo. Cincinnati found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Nomo (4-2) struck out an astounding 15 and walked 1, throwing 77 of 123 pitches for strikes. Jim Thome provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Nomo needed as he finished 3 for 5, blasting a homerun, doubling once, and driving in 3 runs. Los Angeles (N) scored 5 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 5/2/2002: Milwaukee's Williams wins Player of the Week award
Todd Hundley from California wins his 7th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .519 with 5 RBI and slugged .704 in 27 at bats. Matt D. Williams from Milwaukee wins his 7th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .444 and hit .423, while driving in 7 runs. Williams has hit for a .273 average this season. He has 16 extra base hits along with 60 total bases, resulting in a .606 slugging percentage.
Sunday 5/1/2002: Houston's Dwight Gooden wins #300
PHILADELPHIA - Houston's right-hander Dwight Gooden gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Dwight Gooden threw 98 pitches in 6.2 innings, 58 for strikes. He allowed 2 earned runs while striking out 1 and walking 2 earned runs. He has enmassed 4040 K's in 4241 career innings so far, and posts a 3.30 lifetime ERA. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz made some history today, firing a perfect game against Cincinnati. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. The crowd of 61064 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. Smoltz (4-0) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 112 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Aaron Boone helped Smoltz at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, hitting a double.
