Monday 5/16/2002: Detroit's Russell Branyan unloads three times
DETROIT - Russell Branyan was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Detroit to a 10-5 win over Boston by homering three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Jason Beverlin. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Jason Beverlin in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 334 feet from home plate. Number 3 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 413 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Russell collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and driving in 5 runs. Rondell White was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 8/13/2001.
Monday 5/16/2002: Oakland's Hickerson out for 6 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland's southpaw Bryan Hickerson suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Tampa Bay he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Hickerson compiled an ERA of 5.82, going 1-4 in 9 starts. He fanned 36 while giving up 45 hits in 38.2 innings.
Monday 5/16/2002: California's Griffey Jr. wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Ken Griffey Jr., California's starting leftfielder. Ken pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .450 with 2 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .950. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Brad Fullmer, St. Louis' starting third baseman. Fullmer helped his team with an average of .409 and 7 RBI in 22 at bats. His season numbers are: .221 AVG, 32 hits, 8 doubles, no triples and 8 bombs, along with 19 RBI and 16 runs scored.
Saturday 5/14/2002: Jason Schmidt blanks New York (N) with a 2-hitter
NEW YORK (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Jason Schmidt is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. New York (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Schmidt 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 3rd shutouts in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Schmidt (4-3) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 67 of 110 pitches for strikes. Brian S. Giles provided Chicago (N) with the offense Schmidt needed as he went 2 for 4, hitting a double, with 2 RBI. Chicago (N) scored 6 runs on 7 hits.
Wednesday 5/11/2002: Kirk Rueter throws PERFECT GAME against Boston
SEATTLE - Seattle's left-hander Kirk Rueter made some history today, firing a perfect game against Boston. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. The crowd of 39605 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. Rueter (4-3) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 48 of 85 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today. That's a dream coming true for me!' Seattle's leftfielder Ruben Rivera got 3 hits in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rueter. Seattle improved its record to 16-20, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
