ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' players had every reason to congratulate Albert Belle, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 4th inning, Albert drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 14 years of big league action so far, Albert has compiled a batting average of .269, along with 399 homeruns and 1383 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
Tuesday 5/24/2002: Adam Dunn (CLE) will miss full season
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's centerfielder Adam Dunn will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Cleveland and Kansas City. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Dunn collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Groin Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .383, Adam hit .252 and slugged .458. He has collected 31 runs batted in this year.
Monday 5/23/2002: Roy Halladay (FLA) will miss full season
FLORIDA - Florida's right-hander Roy Halladay will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against San Diego on Monday. Florida wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Halladay had suffered a Torn Back Muscle. This season Halladay compiled an ERA of 2.36, going 4-3 in 10 starts. He fanned 58 while giving up 51 hits in 72.1 innings. Roy has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Monday 5/23/2002: Player of the Week honors go to Sexson and Smoltz
Richie Sexson from Boston wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Richie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .417 with 4 HR and 5 RBI while slugging 1.000. His season numbers are: .213 AVG, 35 hits, 11 doubles, no triples and 10 homeruns, along with 18 RBI and 24 runs scored. It's the 5th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's pitcher John Smoltz. John went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 23 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts!
