Well Braves fans, the normally quite braves during the trading season have kicked down the door and started a floooood of trades, including a blockbuster.
After pursuing Sweeney forever from Pittsburg, the Braves struck gold and got the slugging catcher M Ojeda from the Padres to kick off the trade a thon. Miguel is rough behind the plate, but the Skipper knows his coaching staff will have him playing the position at a top level in no time. Until then he'll be the DH for the squad. At only 27 years old, Miguel looks to be a Brave for a long... long time.
In the offseason, the Braves brought in some relievers to shore up the staff that saw top flight closer Dibble start to really decline over the last two seasons, however with the development of the home grown staff of Hanrahan and Valverde, to go with the youngster Strickland, the new found FAs seem to be expendable. Flying the coup so far are Westland to Az and Stranton to Toronto.
Playing it safe, Skipper has brought in Mike Remlinger, just in case they need a spot starter down the stretch. Quite doubtful since they already have Eischen and Smith that can start, but as Skip always says; "If you can start, you can end, but if you can only end, you can never start." Those of us in the booth have yet to really comprehend his words of wisdom, but we are sure they are profound... just not how they could be.
These moves look to save the Braves an additional 7 million this season, which when combined with the salries falling off at seasons end will put the Braves in a great position to be very active in next years FA market.
