Tuesday 6/14/2002: Atlanta has no chance in a 1-hitter by Barry Zito
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s southpaw Barry Zito is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Atlanta on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. Zito (9-1) struck out 6 and issued 3 BB, throwing 72 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Tony Clark helped Zito at the plate, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Tuesday 6/14/2002: Paul Wagner pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Paul Wagner is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 15th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Andujar Cedeno singled with one out in the 8th inning. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Wagner (7-2) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 69 of 103 pitches for strikes. Seattle's catcher Mike Sweeney finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring three times and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wagner. Seattle scored 9 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 6/13/2002: Montreal's Stairs wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Carl Everett, Cleveland's starting centerfielder. Carl was on fire, hitting .379 with 5 HR and 8 RBI. Everett has walked 17 times this year and posts a .367 OBP. While batting .293, 65 for 222, he has driven in 44 runs. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Montreal's Matt Stairs this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .481 with 13 RBI and slugged .926 in 27 at bats. Stairs has hit for a .325 average this season. He has 26 extra base hits along with 121 total bases, resulting in a .524 slugging percentage. He's 5th in the National League in batting and 1st in RBI!
Sunday 6/12/2002: Alex Rodriguez punishes Kansas City with four hits, cycle
KANSAS CITY - New York (A)'s shortstop Alex Rodriguez accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Kansas City, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .264! A pitch from Chris Holt in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 422 feet from home plate in left-center. Hit number 2 followed in the 5th inning, a RBI triple. A two-run double off Dan C. Smith in the 7th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A single in the 8th off Luis Ayala accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Alex scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He is hitting .288 this season, with 7 HR and 38 RBI. He becomes the 115th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Brian Jordan was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/10/2002.
