Thursday 6/23/2002: Henry A. Rodriguez stars with cycle against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - New York (A)'s leftfielder Henry A. Rodriguez once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Minnesota's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Thursday. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Sam Militello. A single in the 7th off Sam Militello accounted for his 2nd hit. Hit number 3 followed in the 9th inning, a triple. In the 14th inning he belted a double off Felix Rodriguez. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Henry A. scored one run, and he collected one RBI as well! He is hitting .231 this season, with 14 HR and 51 RBI. 116 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Henry A.. On 6/12/2002, Alex Rodriguez was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Monday 6/20/2002: Sweeney (SEA) and Vidro (COL) win P.O.W. award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Seattle's Mike Sweeney this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .500, while driving in 8 runs. Sweeney has hit 9 taters this year while batting .229. He adds 12 doubles, along with 36 runs scored. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Colorado's second baseman Jose Vidro. He had an on base percentage of .560 and hit .476, while driving in 8 runs. Jose has gone 68 for 248 (.274) this season, hitting 13 bombs and driving in 37 runs. He has scored 40 runs on his own.
Sunday 6/19/2002: Randy D. Johnson dominates Oakland, gives up just one hit
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s southpaw Randy D. Johnson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 52nd time he has done it in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Johnson (8-3) fanned 9 and walked 4, throwing 115 pitches. Jose A. Bautista provided New York (A) with the offense Johnson needed as he went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. New York (A) improved its record to 38-33, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
Saturday 6/18/2002: Los Angeles (N)'s Jeromy Burnitz unloads four times
NEW YORK (N) - Los Angeles (N) beat New York (N) 12-0, but that was not the real story of the game. Jeromy Burnitz was, as he went deep four times. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 368 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A 390 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Jamie Walker in the 6th inning. His 3rd blast, a solo homerun off Jamie Walker in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 438 feet from home plate. His 4th shot, a three-run homerun off Joe Horgan in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in center field. Jeromy went 6 for 6, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 6 RBI.
