Tuesday 7/26/2002: Hideki Matsui on fire, crushes three
NEW YORK (N) - Hideki Matsui was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Pittsburgh to a 12-1 win over New York (N) by homering three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Kevin Millwood. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Kevin Millwood in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right field. His 3rd shot, off Todd Revenig in the 9th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. Hideki finished 3 for 6, scoring FOUR times and collecting 3 RBI.
Monday 7/25/2002: Bonds and Belle win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Barry Bonds, Bonds helped his team with an average of .417 and 9 RBI in 24 at bats. Barry managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Bonds has walked 42 times this year and posts a .367 OBP. While batting .277, 98 for 354, he has driven in 63 runs. Albert Belle wins his 10th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .375 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.042 in 24 at bats.
Friday 7/22/2002: Kevin Tapani out for full season
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' ace Kevin Tapani will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against San Francisco on Friday. St. Louis wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Tapani had suffered a Torn Ligament Elbow. Kevin has a record of 8-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.80. In 109 Innings he was able to strike out 38 batters.
Friday 7/22/2002: Shane Andrews stars with cycle against Philadelphia
LOS ANGELES (N) - Shane Andrews is a pretty good hitter, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A pitch from Greg Swindell in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 341 feet from home plate in right field. A single in the 3rd off Greg Swindell accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Shingo Takatsu in the 5th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. A single in the 6th off Kerry Ligtenberg accounted for his 4th hit. His 5th hit was a two-run double off Ricardo Rincon in the 8th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Shane scored 2 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .295 this season, with 22 HR and 72 RBI. 117 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Shane. On 6/23/2002, Henry A. Rodriguez was the last player to hit for the cycle.
