Monday 8/8/2002: Seattle's Berkman wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Seattle's Lance Berkman, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Lance was on fire, hitting .500 with 6 HR and 10 RBI. Cincinnati's rightfielder Magglio Ordonez had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Magglio was on fire, hitting .556 with 1 HR and 8 RBI.
Thursday 8/4/2002: Matt Stairs stars with 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS - Montreal's leftfielder Matt Stairs joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1998 where he hit .340 with 44 homeruns and 112 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' He hit a single in the 4th off Josh Beckett for number 2000.
Tuesday 8/2/2002: Barry Zito NO-HITS Houston
CHICAGO (N) - Barry Zito had some fun again. REAL fun. Houston hitters did not. Chicago (N)'s southpaw fired a no-hitter in his 6th shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 51 games started. Zito (17-1) fanned 7 and walked 4, throwing 129 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Chicago (N)'s leftfielder Rondell White stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, homering once, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Zito. Chicago (N) improved its record to 82-25, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.
Tuesday 8/2/2002: Milwaukee's Percival severely injured
MILWAUKEE - When it rains, it pours. Milwaukee's right-hander Troy Percival will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against St. Louis where he left the field in the 9th inning. Pulled Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Troy struck out 46 batters in 43.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.70, his record 2-3.
Monday 8/1/2002: Kiko Calero out for 9 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Kiko Calero suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 9 weeks. In the 7th of the game against California he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Calero was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Opposing players hit .242 against Kiko this season. While posting an ERA of 1.87 he went 2-2 in 0 starts, fanning 25 and walking 9 hitters.
Monday 8/1/2002: Hundley (CAL) and Munoz (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Todd Hundley wins his 8th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Hundley helped his team with an average of .391 and 9 RBI in 23 at bats. Hundley has hit for a .324 average this season. He has 45 extra base hits along with 197 total bases, resulting in a .541 slugging percentage. He's 4th in the American League in batting! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Pedro Munoz, Cincinnati's starting leftfielder. In 26 at bats he hit .423 with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
Monday 8/1/2002: Los Angeles (N)'s Gordon named Pitcher of the Month
Robb Nen couldn't have pitched much better than he did in July, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 3-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 37.2 innings of work he allowed just 14 hits while striking out 38, compiling an ERA of just 0.48. Robb got two complete game shutouts as well! This season Nen compiled an ERA of 2.12, going 12-4 in 21 starts. He fanned 173 while giving up 109 hits in 161 innings. Robb has pitched 3 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! The best month of July in the National League certainly had Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Tom Gordon, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He went 5-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 0.57. He struck out 53 in 47.2 innings. Tom pitched a shutout as well. This season Gordon compiled an ERA of 1.35, going 12-3 in 22 starts.
