CALIFORNIA - Detroit's rightfielder Jay Buhner joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! He hit a single in the 7th off Kenny Rogers for number 2000. His best year so far was 1999 where he hit .249 with 33 homeruns and 130 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.'
Wednesday 9/14/2002: Baltimore's Bonds severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's leftfielder Barry Bonds suffered a season ending injury when he was struck by a pitch from Cleveland's Jae Weong Seo. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Bonds was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Wrist. Barry is hitting .297 this year, with 156 hits in 526 at bats. He has driven in 91 runs, slugging .525.
Tuesday 9/13/2002: Ryan Kohlmeier (COL) will miss 5 weeks
COLORADO - When it rains, it pours. Colorado's right-hander Ryan Kohlmeier will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Montreal where he left the field in the 6th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Kohlmeier was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 0 starts this year Ryan struck out 65 batters in 76.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.77, his record 6-3.
Tuesday 9/13/2002: Greg Maddux pitches 1-hit shutout against San Diego
SAN DIEGO - Greg Maddux took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 6th shutout of the season. He now has 68 career shutouts in 575 games started. With one out in the 8th inning Kiki Hernandez singled to break up the no-hitter. Maddux (22-7) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Aaron Boone helped Maddux at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Monday 9/12/2002: Edgardo Alfonzo parks three against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Chicago (N)'s second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo accomplished that feat in a 14-4 win over New York (N). His 1st shot, off Kevin Millwood in the 2nd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. In the 4th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Joe Horgan. His 3rd blast, a three-run homerun off Todd Revenig in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 360 feet from home plate. Edgardo stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, with three runs scored with 8 RBI. In 4039 career at bats, he has hit 119 homeruns and collected 542 RBI. Bobby Higginson was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/12/2002.
