Saturday 10/1/2002: Nen and Park receive Pitcher of the Month award
Robb Nen pitched like a legend in September, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 5-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 49.1 innings of work he allowed just 28 hits while striking out 47, compiling an ERA of just 1.09. Robb got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 1.81 helped him to a 23-5 record this year. He struck out 266 and walked 27 in 258.2 innings. Robb has pitched 5 shutouts and 11 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Milwaukee's Chan Ho Park had a terrific September, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 34 hitters in his 3 starts, putting together a record of 3-0 while pitching 34 innings. His ERA in September was 0.36. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Chipper Jones, California's starting third baseman. In 88 at bats he hit .375 with 7 HR and 18 RBI. Jones has hit 29 taters this year while batting .326. He adds 38 doubles, along with 122 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in batting! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Shane Andrews this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Shane was on fire, hitting .354 with 9 homeruns and 27 RBI. His season numbers are: .307 AVG, 179 hits, 18 doubles, 4 triples and 38 taters, along with 126 RBI and 107 runs scored. He's 6th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Thursday 9/29/2002: Minnesota's Batista severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Miguel Batista experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Chicago (A), Batista complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .262 against Miguel this season. While posting an ERA of 2.78 he went 19-9 in 32 starts, fanning 128 and walking 25 hitters. Miguel has pitched 3 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 5th in the American League in wins!
Wednesday 9/28/2002: Kevin Rogers pitches his 1st shutout of the season
FLORIDA - Kevin Rogers had some fun again. Montreal hitters did not. Florida's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 235 games started. Rogers (11-14) fanned 1 and walked 1, throwing 120 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Todd Pratt provided Florida with the offense Rogers needed as he finished 1 for 4, homering once, with 2 RBI. Florida improved its record to 80-79, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 9/26/2002: San Diego's Madritsch severely injured
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's southpaw Bobby Madritsch experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 3rd inning of the game against Los Angeles (N), Madritsch complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. In 32 starts this year Bobby struck out 153 batters in 228 innings of work. His ERA is 3.99, his record 5-18. He has 4 complete games and one shutout.
Monday 9/26/2002: Los Angeles (N)'s Burnitz wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Ben Shelton, Baltimore's starting leftfielder. In 27 at bats he hit .444 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The National League's best player of the week was Los Angeles (N)'s Jeromy Burnitz, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Burnitz helped his team with an average of .474 and 5 RBI in 19 at bats. This year Burnitz drove in 89 and scored 114 runs while batting .318 with 26 homeruns. He's 3rd in the National League in batting!
Sunday 9/25/2002: Minnesota's Reggie L. Sanders gets the cycle
TEXAS - Reggie L. Sanders hits 'em where they ain't. Texas certainly agrees as Minnesota's rightfielder unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. His 1st hit was a double off Chad Ogea in the 1st inning. A pitch from Chad Ogea in the 2nd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 397 feet from home plate in left-center. Hit number 3 followed in the 4th inning, a triple. A single in the 9th off Hisanori Takahashi accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Reggie L. did drive in one while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 121 hits this season, accounting for a .261 batting average. 119 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Reggie L.. Shane Andrews was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/26/2002.
Sunday 9/25/2002: Paul Wagner shuts out Toronto on 2 hits
TORONTO - Seattle's right-hander Paul Wagner is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Toronto on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 16th time he has done it in his career. With two outs in the 5th inning Darryl Hamilton singled to break up the no-hitter. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Wagner (21-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 96 pitches. Rich Becker provided Seattle with the offense Wagner needed as he got 4 hits in 5 AB, doubling twice, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. Seattle scored 9 runs on 15 hits.
Friday 9/23/2002: Florida's Barry Larkin gets milestone hit
FLORIDA - Florida's Barry Larkin showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Colorado on Friday. His hit in the 6th inning was a single off Carlos Perez. In 13 years of big league action so far, Barry has compiled a batting average of .268, along with 167 homeruns and 1070 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
Friday 9/23/2002: Montreal's Fuentes out for 7 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal is without its lefty Brian Fuentes for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hector Ortiz in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Tricep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Brian struck out 118 batters in 125.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.23, his record 9-3.
