Monday 4/25/2003: Player of the Week honors go to Alomar and Overbay
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Chicago (A)'s Roberto Alomar this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .433 with 11 RBI and slugged .900 in 30 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! His season features a batting average of .265 (22 hits in 83 AB), 3 doubles, 3 triples and 3 longballs. Alomar collected 13 RBI and 13 runs as well. Lyle Overbay from Montreal wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Lyle went 10 for 24 (.417), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 11 RBI.
Saturday 4/23/2003: Mark Kotsay (STL) will miss 5-6 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' season has taken a hit after one of their best players, rightfielder Mark Kotsay, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5-6 weeks. Pulled Back Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Kotsay drove in 8 and scored 8 runs while batting .258 with no taters.
Saturday 4/23/2003: Baltimore's Barry Bonds crushes homerun #500
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's Barry Bonds showed a smile on his face after he belted his 500th career homerun against Boston on Saturday. Perhaps his best year so far was 1999 where he hit .340 with 44 homeruns and 140 RBI. Barry has managed to hit 30+ homeruns in a season 9 times, and he topped 40 homeruns 4 times. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' A pitch from James Baldwin in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 410 feet from home plate in right field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Thursday 4/21/2003: Gary Glover turns in great performance against San Diego
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Gary Glover is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Glover 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 5th shutouts in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Glover (4-0) fanned 9 and walked none, throwing 97 pitches. The hitting star for Houston was catcher Javy Lopez, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Tuesday 4/19/2003: San Diego's Sheets out for 5 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's ace Ben Sheets suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 4 starts this year Ben struck out 21 batters in 25 innings of work. His ERA is 5.40, his record 2-1. He's 4th in the National League in wins!
Tuesday 4/19/2003: Minnesota has no chance in a 2-hitter by Paul Wagner
SEATTLE - Paul Wagner took the mound and never left. And Minnesota hitters couldn't touch him at all. Seattle's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 278 games started. Wagner (4-0) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 124 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Mike B. Young helped Wagner at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, stroking a double, scoring twice. Seattle scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
