NEW YORK (N) - Houston's Bronson Arroyo drilled New York (N)'s second baseman Felipe Lopez in the 6th inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Felipe Lopez will miss at least 4-5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Hand. This year Lopez drove in 12 and scored 13 runs while batting .298 with 2 bombs.
Monday 5/9/2003: Player of the Week honors go to Nen and Soriano
Minnesota's pitcher Robb Nen had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Robb went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.52, while fanning 14 in 17.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Cincinnati's third baseman Alfonso Soriano had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .393 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 28 at bats. His season numbers are: .299 AVG, 41 hits, 6 doubles, one triple and 13 homeruns, along with 30 RBI and 34 runs scored. He's 5th in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Saturday 5/7/2003: Alfonso Soriano punishes San Francisco with three dingers
SAN FRANCISCO - Alfonso Soriano was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Cincinnati to a 21-0 win over San Francisco by homering three times. A 449 foot drive to center field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Kevin Correia in the 1st inning. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 409 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. His 3rd shot, off Dan Giese in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Overall he finished 4 for 6, doubling once, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 7 RBI.
Saturday 5/7/2003: Greg Maddux (ATL) will miss 6 weeks
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .216 against Greg this season. While posting an ERA of 2.29 he went 3-4 in 8 starts, fanning 39 and walking 11 hitters. He has 3 complete games and one shutout.
Friday 5/6/2003: Pete Harnisch fires 2-hitter against San Diego
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Pete Harnisch is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. Harnisch (6-1) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 70 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Delino DeShields helped Harnisch at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, hitting a double. The final score of the game was 6-0.
