Tuesday 5/17/2003: Pete Harnisch fires NO-NO against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - St. Louis' right-hander Pete Harnisch made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Milwaukee. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Harnisch (8-1) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 67 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' The hitting star for St. Louis was leftfielder Phil Plantier, he finished 1 for 6, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and driving in 6 runs. St. Louis scored 18 runs on 15 hits.
Monday 5/16/2003: Milwaukee's Alicea severely injured
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's second baseman Luis Alicea will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Milwaukee and St. Louis. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Alicea collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Alicea was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Foot. Alicea has walked 15 times this year and posts a .328 OBP. While batting .255, 40 for 157, he has driven in 18 runs.

TEXAS - Texas' leftfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. will miss at least 6-7 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Groin Muscle. While compiling an on base percentage of .313, Jerry hit .274 and slugged .387. He has collected 8 runs batted in this year.

Minnesota's third baseman Jose Offerman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 21 at bats he hit .381 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. Offerman has hit for a .294 average this season. He has 24 extra base hits along with 91 total bases, resulting in a .669 slugging percentage. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Todd Helton, Colorado's starting first baseman. Todd went 16 for 26 (.615), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 7 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .423, Todd hit .386 and slugged .536. He has collected 21 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Saturday 5/14/2003: Brian Jordan stars with cycle against San Diego
SAN DIEGO - Florida's first baseman Brian Jordan once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up San Diego's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Saturday. A single in the 2nd off Troy Mattes accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 4th inning accounted for a double. A 438 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Ted Lilly in the 7th inning. His 4th hit was a RBI triple off Antonio Osuna in the 8th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Brian scored 3 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He is hitting .276 this season, with 2 HR and 26 RBI. He becomes the 120th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 9/25/2002, Reggie L. Sanders was the last player to hit for the cycle.

OAKLAND - Oakland's pitcher Joey Hamilton was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Oakland and Kansas City. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Hamilton will miss about 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Hamilton was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Finger. This season Hamilton compiled an ERA of 7.58, going 0-3 in 7 starts. He fanned 21 while giving up 46 hits in 29.2 innings.
