Monday 5/23/2003: Alomar and Pujols win Player of the Week award
It's the 7th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s second baseman Roberto Alomar. Roberto pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .552 with 2 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .828. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Pittsburgh's third baseman Albert Pujols had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Albert was on fire, hitting .478 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Pujols has hit 9 longballs this year while batting .346. He adds 12 doubles, along with 34 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Sunday 5/22/2003: Florida's Jeromy Burnitz laces 2000th career hit
FLORIDA - Florida's rightfielder Jeromy Burnitz already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 1st inning was a double off Darren Oliver. In 12 years of big league action so far, Jeromy has compiled a batting average of .299, along with 331 homeruns and 1147 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
Friday 5/20/2003: Troy Mattes (SDG) will miss 6 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego is without its right-hander Troy Mattes for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ryan Howard in a game against Philadelphia. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Troy has a record of 0-2 this season, with an ERA of 4.40. In 47 Innings he was able to strike out 18 batters.
