Wednesday 6/1/2003: Minnesota's Radke earns Pitcher of the Month award
Brad Radke pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 1.68 helped him to a 5-0 record in May. He worked 48.1 innings, striking out 17 hitters while walking 10. In 7 starts this year Brad struck out 19 batters in 61.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.75, his record 6-0. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 9th in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is St. Louis' Pete Harnisch. He had an ERA of just 1.29 in 48.2 innings of work in which he struck out 42 hitters. His record in May is 4-1. Pete got two complete game shutouts as well! This season Harnisch compiled an ERA of 1.08, going 9-1 in 11 starts. He fanned 79 while giving up 54 hits in 91.1 innings. Pete has pitched 3 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Wednesday 6/1/2003: Cincinnati's Soriano named Batter of the Month
The American League's best player of the month was Minnesota's Jose Offerman, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. In 100 at bats he hit .330 with 9 HR and 25 RBI. Jose has gone 58 for 188 (.309) this season, hitting 13 longballs and driving in 33 runs. He has scored 46 runs on his own. Alfonso Soriano of Cincinnati wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Alfonso was on fire, hitting .355 with 11 homeruns and 27 RBI. He has hit 18 homeruns while batting .318 this season. His 67 hits and 19 walks add up to a .385 on-base percentage. He's 7th in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Monday 5/30/2003: Player of the Week honors go to Ramirez and Lee
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Manny Ramirez, Minnesota's starting designated hitter. Manny was on fire, hitting .500 with 5 HR and 14 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. His season numbers are: .333 AVG, 60 hits, 16 doubles, one triple and 14 bombs, along with 44 RBI and 38 runs scored. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! Colorado's leftfielder Carlos Lee had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Lee helped his team with an average of .450 and 8 RBI in 20 at bats. Lee has walked 17 times this year and posts a .400 OBP. While batting .346, 66 for 191, he has driven in 39 runs. He's 6th in the National League in batting!
Thursday 5/26/2003: Seattle's Sweeney out for 5 weeks
SEATTLE - Seattle's catcher Mike Sweeney will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. Sweeney was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Ulna. Sweeney has hit for a .214 average this season. He has 12 extra base hits along with 58 total bases, resulting in a .365 slugging percentage.
