Wednesday 6/8/2003: Carlos Lee found the stroke, smashes three homers
COLORADO - Carlos Lee was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Colorado to a 11-1 win over Milwaukee by homering three times. A pitch from Carlos Pulido in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 443 feet from home plate in center field. A 377 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Carlos Pulido in the 3rd inning. Number 3 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 344 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Overall he finished 3 for 4, scoring three times and driving in 6 runs. So far this season he is batting .336 with 20 homers and 53 RBI.
Tuesday 6/7/2003: Barry Zito out for 9-10 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N) is without its left-hander Barry Zito for at least 9-10 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Herbert Perry in a game against New York (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Zito was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Elbow. This season Zito compiled an ERA of 3.74, going 7-3 in 11 starts. He fanned 46 while giving up 62 hits in 74.2 innings.
Tuesday 6/7/2003: Jon Rauch (STL) will miss 7 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Jon Rauch suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 13th of the game against Atlanta he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. His ERA of 2.08 helped him to a 0-0 record this year. He struck out 11 and walked 5 in 13 innings.
Monday 6/6/2003: Player of the Week honors go to Justice and Munoz
It's the 8th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's rightfielder David Justice. He hit .444 with 9 RBI and slugged .852 in 27 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 9 game hitting streak right now. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Pedro Munoz, Cincinnati's starting leftfielder. Munoz helped his team with an average of .556 and 8 RBI in 27 at bats.
Thursday 6/2/2003: John Smoltz shuts out Florida on 2 hits
FLORIDA - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz. Florida found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 77th time he has done it in his career. Smoltz (11-2) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 93 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Aaron Boone provided Atlanta with the offense Smoltz needed as he went 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, and driving in 3 runs. Atlanta improved its record to 39-16, scoring 8 runs on 13 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2003: Detroit's David Justice laces 2000th career hit
DETROIT - Detroit's David Justice showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Seattle on Wednesday. His best year so far was 1996 where he hit .264 with 46 homeruns and 132 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' With two outs in the 5th inning, David drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
