FLORIDA - Great days are rare. But not for Arizona's right-hander Chan Ho Park. Florida found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Park (13-2) fanned 8 and walked 2, throwing 112 pitches. The hitting star for Arizona was catcher Matt LeCroy, he finished 4 for 4, hitting a homerun. Arizona improved its record to 61-40, scoring 4 runs on 11 hits.

OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's ace Randy Tomlin will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Seattle where he left the field in the 5th inning. Oakland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Tomlin had suffered a Strained Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 3.94 helped him to a 7-8 record this year. He struck out 121 and walked 21 in 146.1 innings. Monday 7/25/2003: Arizona's Hyzdu wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's third baseman Robin Ventura had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Robin went 12 for 22 (.545), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 6 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Adam Hyzdu, Arizona's starting rightfielder. Adam went 11 for 28 (.393), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 16 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .354, Adam hit .289 and slugged .563. He has collected 75 runs batted in this year. He's 10th in the National League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns!
Sunday 7/24/2003: New York (N)'s Sexson out for 4-5 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s Richie Sexson suffered a serious injury Sunday in a game against Arizona. Sexson fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 4-5 weeks. Pulled Achilles Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Sexson has walked 36 times this year and posts a .312 OBP. While batting .231, 81 for 351, he has driven in 50 runs.

SAN FRANCISCO - John Smoltz had some fun again. San Francisco hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 6th shutout of the season. He now has 80 career shutouts in 559 games started. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Smoltz (18-4) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 113 pitches. Kevin Barker helped Smoltz at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's right-hander Brad Penny will not pitch for at least 9-10 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Kansas City where he left the field in the 1st inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. In 21 starts this year Brad struck out 77 batters in 102.1 innings of work. His ERA is 5.72, his record 3-9.
Saturday 7/23/2003: Huge blow for San Diego's Young, career over
SAN DIEGO - It was one of baseball saddest days. San Diego's right-hander Chris R. Young fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Florida on Saturday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Shea Hillenbrand, then suddenly collapsed. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Tricep Muscle. This season Young compiled an ERA of 4.24, going 4-10 in 20 starts. He fanned 101 while giving up 104 hits in 127.1 innings. His career featured a record of 8-34 with an ERA of 4.51. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.

MONTREAL - When it rains, it pours. Montreal's right-hander Allan Simpson will not pitch for at least 4 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Milwaukee where he left the field in the 5th inning. Simpson was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Elbow. This season Simpson compiled an ERA of 5.60, going 4-6 in 15 starts. He fanned 81 while giving up 105 hits in 80.1 innings.

The hitting star for Arizona was second baseman Tony Batista, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 10-0.
