Saturday 7/30/2003: Pittsburgh's Heredia severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Wilson Heredia suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Los Angeles (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Heredia had suffered a Pulled Tricep Muscle. This season Heredia compiled an ERA of 8.18, going 0-4 in 0 starts. He fanned 9 while giving up 40 hits in 33 innings.
Saturday 7/30/2003: John H. Doherty out for 4-5 weeks
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander John H. Doherty will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 1st inning. Toronto wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Doherty had suffered a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Doherty compiled an ERA of 4.27, going 6-11 in 21 starts. He fanned 72 while giving up 142 hits in 116 innings. John H. has pitched one shutout and one complete game.

TAMPA BAY - Tampa Bay is without its ace Mike Williams for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Matt Walbeck in a game against Los Angeles (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Williams was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Elbow. His ERA of 3.35 helped him to a 7-8 record this year. He struck out 87 and walked 13 in 118.1 innings.
