The American League Player of the Week award goes to Chipper Jones, Los Angeles (A)'s starting third baseman. In 22 at bats he hit .545 with 3 HR and 4 RBI. He has hit 22 bombs while batting .301 this season. His 117 hits and 29 walks add up to a .372 on-base percentage. The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Tino Martinez, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .538 and hit .455, while driving in 9 runs.
Saturday 8/6/2003: Pittsburgh's Peavy severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's ace Jake Peavy suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Arizona he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Bone Chips Shoulder was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Peavy compiled an ERA of 4.49, going 7-12 in 23 starts. He fanned 128 while giving up 135 hits in 142.1 innings.
Saturday 8/6/2003: Houston's Craig Biggio gets milestone hit
HOUSTON - Houston's players had every reason to congratulate Craig Biggio, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 6th inning was a single off Sean Lowe. In 14 years of big league action so far, Craig has compiled a batting average of .252, along with 178 homeruns and 992 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
Thursday 8/4/2003: Donovan Osborne out for 7 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's lefty Donovan Osborne suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Detroit he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Baltimore wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Osborne had suffered a Ruptured Elbow Ligament. His ERA of 4.66 helped him to a 6-12 record this year. He struck out 94 and walked 24 in 137 innings.
Wednesday 8/3/2003: Arizona's Larry Walker hits for the cycle
PITTSBURGH - Larry Walker led Arizona to a 21-4 win over Pittsburgh by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A single in the 3rd off John Wasdin accounted for his 1st hit. In the 4th inning he belted a double off John Wasdin. A 408 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a GRAND SLAM off Brent Billingsley in the 8th inning. In the 9th inning he unloaded a RBI triple off Wilson Heredia. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Larry scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .324. 121 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Larry. Brian Jordan was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/14/2003.
Monday 8/1/2003: New York (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by John Smoltz
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 81st time he has done it in his career. Smoltz (20-4) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 114 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Atlanta's second baseman Aaron Boone finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smoltz. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 8/1/2003: Toronto's Weber out for 7 weeks
TORONTO - Toronto's pitcher Ben Weber was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 9th inning of the game between Toronto and Los Angeles (A). Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Weber will miss about 7 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Finger. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Weber compiled an ERA of 4.70, going 2-3 in 0 starts. He fanned 32 while giving up 77 hits in 59.1 innings.
Monday 8/1/2003: Montreal's Guerrero wins Player of the Week award
It's the 11th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s first baseman Frank E. Thomas. Thomas helped his team with an average of .400 and 12 RBI in 30 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 31 at bats he hit .484 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 10 game hitting streak right now. His season numbers are: .300 AVG, 116 hits, 21 doubles, one triple and 20 homeruns, along with 70 RBI and 80 runs scored.

Darryl Kile couldn't have pitched much better than he did in July, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 5 games in July, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.65 in 41.2 innings. Darryl fanned 31 hitters. Darryl got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .156 against Darryl this season. While posting an ERA of 1.93 he went 16-4 in 22 starts, fanning 126 and walking 47 hitters. He has 5 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Arizona's Chan Ho Park had a terrific July, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award.
