Monday 8/22/2003: Houston's Utley wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mo Vaughn, Boston's starting first baseman. He had an on base percentage of .533 and hit .391, while driving in 7 runs. The National League's best player of the week was Houston's Chase Utley, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Chase pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .478 with 4 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.043.
Saturday 8/20/2003: Aramis Ramirez collects five hits against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Aramis Ramirez punished Pittsburgh's pitching today, collecting five hits in 6 AB. That definitely helped Houston, they won the game 22 to 4. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Woody Williams in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 398 feet from home plate. In the 8th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Wilson Heredia. He collected singles in the 2nd (one RBI) , in the 5th inning and in the 5th inning (two RBIs). Aramis did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He is hitting .247 this season, with 18 HR and 77 RBI.
Friday 8/19/2003: Greg McMichael out for 6 weeks
FLORIDA - Florida's right-hander Greg McMichael suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Colorado he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Florida wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that McMichael had suffered a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season McMichael compiled an ERA of 2.68, going 1-1 in 0 starts. He fanned 72 while giving up 50 hits in 53.2 innings.
Wednesday 8/17/2003: It's NO-NO time for Chan Ho Park against Montreal
MONTREAL - Chan Ho Park had some fun again. REAL fun. Montreal hitters did not. Arizona's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 273 games started. Park (17-2) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 5, throwing 137 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Matt D. Williams helped Park at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once, and collecting 2 RBI. Arizona scored 5 runs on 7 hits.
Wednesday 8/17/2003: Chris Carpenter blanks Toronto with a 2-hitter
TORONTO - Chris Carpenter had some fun again. Toronto hitters did not. Kansas City's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 206 games started. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Carpenter (10-10) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 93 pitches. Keith Luuloa helped Carpenter at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, doubling once. Kansas City improved its record to 59-62, scoring 1 run on 4 hits.
Tuesday 8/16/2003: Jose Vidro ropes four hits, completes cycle
CHICAGO (N) - Jose Vidro is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A pitch from Julio Santana in the 1st inning left his bat for a RBI double. His 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Julio Santana in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. A single in the 7th off Tim Spooneybarger accounted for his 3rd hit. A triple off Eddie Guardado in the 9th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Jose did drive in 4 while scoring one run on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .297. He's now the 122nd player in league history to hit for the cycle! Larry Walker was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/3/2003.
