CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s left-hander Arthur Rhodes is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Francisco found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Rhodes 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 20th shutouts in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Rhodes (21-4) struck out an astounding 15 and walked none, throwing 78 of 108 pitches for strikes. Johnny Damon provided Chicago (N) with the offense Rhodes needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (N) improved its record to 102-37, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits.
Tuesday 9/6/2003: Robb Nen quiets Oakland bats with shutout
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Robb Nen is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Oakland found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Nen 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 26th shutouts in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Nen (19-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 117 pitches. Manny Ramirez provided Minnesota with the offense Nen needed as he finished with 4 hits in 4 AB, homering twice, with three runs scored with 6 RBI. Minnesota improved its record to 95-44, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 9/5/2003: Jeter (MIN) and Glaus (CHN) win P.O.W. award
Minnesota's second baseman Derek Jeter had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Jeter helped his team with an average of .593 and 2 RBI in 27 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Chicago (N)'s Troy Glaus, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Glaus helped his team with an average of .483 and 10 RBI in 29 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now.
Sunday 9/4/2003: Minnesota's Pavano out for 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - When it rains, it pours. Minnesota's right-hander Carl Pavano will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Pavano was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 25 starts this year Carl struck out 154 batters in 172.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.81, his record 15-2. Carl has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. He's 10th in the American League in wins!
