CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N) is without its right-hander Jose Veras for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ron Coomer in a game against St. Louis. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Jose struck out 49 batters in 54 innings of work. His ERA is 2.50, his record 2-0.

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its right-hander Rick Huisman for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Aaron Rowand in a game against Montreal. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Cincinnati wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Huisman had suffered a Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Opposing players hit .244 against Rick this season. Monday 9/12/2003: Jose Vidro out for 5 weeks
COLORADO - Colorado's Jose Vidro suffered a serious injury Monday in a game against Philadelphia. Vidro fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Groin Muscle which will require surgery. Vidro has hit for a .303 average this season. He has 57 extra base hits along with 259 total bases, resulting in a .534 slugging percentage.
Monday 9/12/2003: Florida's Everett wins Player of the Week award
Oakland's centerfielder Pat Burrell had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 21 at bats he hit .524 with 4 HR and 7 RBI. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! Burrell has walked 61 times this year and posts a .334 OBP. While batting .252, 128 for 508, he has driven in 85 runs. The National League's best player of the week was Florida's Carl Everett, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Carl was on fire, hitting .450 with 4 HR and 16 RBI.
Sunday 9/11/2003: Arizona's Larry Walker laces 3000th career hit
ARIZONA - Arizona's leftfielder Larry Walker joined some elite company today, collecting his 3000th career hit! He hit a single in the 3rd off Dan Haren for number 3000. Along with his 3000 hits, Larry collected 440 homeruns and 1597 RBI in 17 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Sunday 9/11/2003: Kevin Rogers shuts out San Diego on 2 hits
FLORIDA - Florida's lefty Kevin Rogers is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Rogers 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 9th shutouts in his career. Rogers (17-5) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 120 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Florida's shortstop Jack Wilson finished 4 for 4, doubling once, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rogers. Florida improved its record to 81-62, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.

HOUSTON - Houston's Jose Fernandez suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against New York (N). Fernandez fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Fernandez was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Abdominal Muscle. Jose has gone 146 for 499 (.293) this season, hitting 23 longballs and driving in 87 runs. He has scored 84 runs on his own.
