Thursday 9/22/2003: Montreal's Overbay out for 4-5 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's Lyle Overbay suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against Arizona. Overbay fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 4-5 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Achilles Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. Lyle has gone 146 for 490 (.298) this season, hitting 13 longballs and driving in 89 runs. He has scored 77 runs on his own.
Thursday 9/22/2003: Sammy Sosa has 2000th career hits
BALTIMORE - Texas' Sammy Sosa showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Baltimore on Thursday. Along with his 2000 hits, Sammy collected 343 homeruns and 1260 RBI in 13 seasons. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' He hit a double in the 4th off Manny Aybar for number 2000.
Wednesday 9/21/2003: Milwaukee has no chance in a 1-hitter by Bud Smith
HOUSTON - Bud Smith took the mound and never left. And Milwaukee hitters couldn't touch him at all. Houston's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 28 games started. Smith (7-13) struck out 3 and walked 2, throwing 62 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Houston's centerfielder Darin Erstad finished 2 for 5, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smith. Houston scored 8 runs on 15 hits.

ARIZONA - Houston's Jeff Bagwell showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Arizona on Tuesday. His hit in the 2nd inning was a single off Roger Bailey. His best year so far was 1996 where he hit .307 with 30 homeruns and 111 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!'
Tuesday 9/20/2003: Dave Fleming (DET) will miss 5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's pitcher Dave Fleming was part of a scary incident that saw the lefty being hit by a line drive in the 1st inning of the game between Detroit and Texas. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Fleming will miss about 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Fleming was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Hand. His ERA of 4.40 helped him to a 17-5 record this year. He struck out 87 and walked 45 in 200.1 innings. He's 9th in the American League in wins!
Monday 9/19/2003: Player of the Week honors go to Sosa and Frye
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Texas' Sammy Sosa this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .452 and hit .414, while driving in 6 runs. While compiling an on base percentage of .356, Sammy hit .299 and slugged .557. He has collected 101 runs batted in this year. Jeff Frye from Montreal wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .633 with 12 RBI and slugged .733 in 30 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. His best year so far was 1999 where he hit .293 with 32 homeruns and 101 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' He hit a double in the 3rd off Barry Zito for number 2000.

CHICAGO (N) - Great days are rare. But not for Chicago (N)'s left-hander Arthur Rhodes. New York (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Rhodes (23-4) was really unbelievable, striking out 17 and walking 2, throwing 88 of 137 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (N) was leftfielder Scott Podsednik, he finished with 4 hits in 6 AB, doubling once, scoring FOUR runs. The final score of the game was 15-0.
