NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Hideo Nomo is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Detroit on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 24th time he has done it in his career. Nomo (5-1) struck out 8 and walked 4, throwing 77 of 128 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Ichiro Suzuki helped Nomo at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. New York (A) scored 1 run on 4 hits.
Monday 5/9/2004: Colorado's Lee wins Player of the Week award
Chipper Jones from Los Angeles (A) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He had an on base percentage of .519 and hit .480, while driving in 10 runs. His season numbers are: .328 AVG, 45 hits, 6 doubles, 4 triples and 7 taters, along with 30 RBI and 24 runs scored. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Carlos Lee, Colorado's starting leftfielder. Lee helped his team with an average of .462 and 7 RBI in 26 at bats.

LOS ANGELES (A) - Chipper Jones is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Roy Oswalt in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 452 feet from home plate. A pitch from Roy Oswalt in the 4th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 419 feet from home plate in center field. He collected singles in the 6th (one RBI) and in the 8th . Chipper did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .336. Los Angeles (A) improved its record to 17-14, scoring 7 runs on 14 hits.

HOUSTON - When it rains, it pours. Houston's right-hander Dan Miceli will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 9th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 0 starts this year Dan struck out 17 batters in 19.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.37, his record 1-0.
Tuesday 5/3/2004: Cincinnati's Green out for 4 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Shawn Green, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4 weeks.
