Tuesday 5/17/2004: Pete Harnisch pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CINCINNATI - Age doesn't matter. At least St. Louis' right-hander Pete Harnisch shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against Cincinnati, recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Harnisch (6-3) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 106 pitches. Delino DeShields helped Harnisch at the plate, he finished 2 for 4. St. Louis scored 2 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 5/17/2004: Chris Carpenter pitches his 1st shutout of the season
KANSAS CITY - Chris Carpenter took the mound and never left. And New York (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Kansas City's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 223 games started. Carpenter (4-3) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 58 of 93 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Keith Luuloa helped Carpenter at the plate, he went 2 for 3, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Monday 5/16/2004: Player of the Week honors go to Branyan and Lee
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Russell Branyan, Detroit's starting rightfielder. Branyan helped his team with an average of .440 and 11 RBI in 25 at bats. He has hit 15 homeruns while batting .296 this season. His 47 hits and 14 walks add up to a .353 on-base percentage. He's 6th in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Carlos Lee wins his 5th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Carlos was on fire, hitting .632 with 2 HR and 10 RBI.
Friday 5/13/2004: Carlos Febles drills 5 hits
BALTIMORE - Carlos Febles hits 'em where they ain't. Baltimore certainly agrees as Minnesota's shortstop unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A RBI double off R.A. Dickey in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Manny Aybar. His 4th hit, a GRAND SLAM off Shane Reynolds in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in right field. He had singles in the 2nd inning (one RBI) and in the 6th inning (one RBI). Carlos scored 3 runs, and he collected 10 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 49 hits in 154 at bats, resulting in a .318 batting average. Minnesota improved its record to 26-12, scoring 20 runs on 20 hits.
Friday 5/13/2004: Robb Nen blanks Baltimore with a 2-hitter
BALTIMORE - Minnesota's right-hander Robb Nen is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 5th inning Ben Shelton singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Nen (6-1) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 71 of 113 pitches for strikes. Minnesota's shortstop Carlos Febles got 5 hits in 5 AB, homering twice, stroking a double, with three runs scored with 10 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nen. Minnesota improved its record to 25-12, scoring 20 runs on 20 hits.
