Monday 5/23/2004: Kansas City has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Livan Hernandez
DETROIT - Livan Hernandez had some fun again. REAL fun. Kansas City hitters did not. Detroit's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 210 games started. Victor Martinez spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 5th inning. Hernandez (5-3) fanned 7 and walked 2, throwing 106 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Bengie Molina helped Hernandez at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring two runs. Detroit scored 3 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 5/23/2004: Hernandez and Walker win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Felix Hernandez, one of Oakland's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Hernandez compiled an ERA of 4.08, going 3-5 in 9 starts. He fanned 33 while giving up 50 hits in 57.1 innings. Felix has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Arizona's Larry Walker this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 27 at bats he hit .519 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Larry has gone 61 for 180 (.339) this season, hitting 6 bombs and driving in 20 runs. He has scored 41 runs on his own. He's 6th in the National League in batting!
Sunday 5/22/2004: Keith Luuloa out for 4-5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, second baseman Keith Luuloa, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4-5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Thigh Muscle. His season features a batting average of .255 (35 hits in 137 AB), 5 doubles, no triples and 3 homeruns. Luuloa collected 22 RBI and 13 runs as well.
Saturday 5/21/2004: Ben Shelton (BAL) will miss 6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Kansas City's Aaron Myette drilled Baltimore's leftfielder Ben Shelton in the 3rd inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Ben Shelton will miss at least 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Cheekbone. Surgery will be performed next week. Shelton has hit 9 bombs this year while batting .289. He adds 6 doubles, along with 21 runs scored.

SAN FRANCISCO - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia's right-hander Roger Pavlik. San Francisco found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. Pavlik (2-4) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 63 of 106 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Philadelphia's third baseman Hector Luna finished with 4 hits in 6 AB, homering once, scoring two runs with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Pavlik. Philadelphia scored 14 runs on 15 hits.

CHICAGO (A) - Great days are rare. But not for Chicago (A)'s right-hander Darryl Kile. Tampa Bay found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 17th time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Kile (6-3) fanned 8 and walked 3, throwing 109 pitches. Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams got 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring twice and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Kile. The final score of the game was 11-0.
Wednesday 5/18/2004: Seattle's Rueter severely injured
SEATTLE - When it rains, it pours. Seattle's lefty Kirk Rueter will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston where he left the field in the 6th inning. Rueter was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Kirk has a record of 3-5 this season, with an ERA of 5.45. In 66 Innings he was able to strike out 56 batters.
