Monday 6/6/2004: Player of the Week honors go to Cordero and Ortiz
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Wil Cordero, Boston's starting first baseman. He had an on base percentage of .613 and hit .571, while driving in 4 runs. Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman David Ortiz had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .448, while driving in 15 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 9 game hitting streak right now.
Friday 6/3/2004: Montreal's Guerrero out for 5 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's rightfielder Vladimir Guerrero will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 8th inning of the game between Montreal and Philadelphia. He dove for a drive off the bat of Juan Encarnacion, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Montreal wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Guerrero had suffered a Broken Hand. Vladimir is hitting .366 this year, with 67 hits in 183 at bats. He has driven in 39 runs, slugging .645. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Thursday 6/2/2004: Pittsburgh's Snow severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman J.T. Snow, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5-6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Groin Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. J.T. is hitting .284 this year, with 23 hits in 81 at bats. He has driven in 14 runs, slugging .481.
Thursday 6/2/2004: Montreal's Weathers out for 5 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal is without its right-hander David Weathers for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ivan Rodriguez in a game against St. Louis. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Weathers was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Tricep Muscle. This season Weathers compiled an ERA of 11.25, going 0-0 in 0 starts. He fanned 7 while giving up 10 hits in 8 innings.

BALTIMORE - Great days are rare. But not for Boston's lefty Denny Neagle. Baltimore found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Neagle (7-5) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 106 pitches. Boston's first baseman Wil Cordero stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Neagle. Boston improved its record to 23-32, scoring 5 runs on 18 hits.

DETROIT - Detroit is without its southpaw Nate Teut for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ryan Doumit in a game against Tampa Bay. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. His ERA of 3.08 helped him to a 2-4 record this year. He struck out 53 and walked 34 in 64.1 innings.
