Wednesday 6/15/2004: Archi Cianfrocco (ATL) will miss 7 weeks
ATLANTA - Atlanta's shortstop Archi Cianfrocco hurt himself in the 1st inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Archi Cianfrocco will miss at least 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Tricep Muscle which will require surgery. Archi has gone 60 for 237 (.253) this season, hitting 12 homeruns and driving in 43 runs. He has scored 29 runs on his own.
Monday 6/13/2004: Los Angeles (N)'s Gonzalez wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Chipper Jones, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. In 27 at bats he hit .444 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Juan Gonzalez, Los Angeles (N)'s starting leftfielder. In 21 at bats he hit .476 with 4 HR and 9 RBI.
Sunday 6/12/2004: Daisuke Matsuzaka shuts out San Francisco on 2 hits
CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for Cincinnati's right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka. San Francisco found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Matsuzaka (7-4) struck out an astounding 14 and walked none, throwing 88 of 126 pitches for strikes. Alfonso Soriano helped Matsuzaka at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 11-0.
Saturday 6/11/2004: J.D. Drew out for 5 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's rightfielder J.D. Drew will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Groin Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Drew has hit 8 homeruns this year while batting .254. He adds 17 doubles, along with 29 runs scored.
Friday 6/10/2004: Mo Vaughn (PIT) will miss 4-5 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Pittsburgh's designated hitter Mo Vaughn will miss about 4-5 weeks after being hit by Greg Maddux in the 6th inning of the game between Pittsburgh and Atlanta. After being taken to a local hospital, Vaughn was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Hand. His season features a batting average of .221 (42 hits in 190 AB), 5 doubles, no triples and 4 bombs. Vaughn collected 22 RBI and 22 runs as well.
