Monday 7/4/2004: Rodriguez and Garciaparra win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was New York (A)'s Alex Rodriguez, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. He hit .500 with 4 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 18 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Nomar Garciaparra this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Garciaparra helped his team with an average of .471 and 7 RBI in 17 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Friday 7/1/2004: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Seattle's pitcher Paul Wagner is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. His ERA of just 1.69 helped him to a 6-0 record in June. He worked 48 innings, striking out 49 hitters while walking 8. Paul has a record of 11-4 this season, with an ERA of 1.96. In 128.2 Innings he was able to strike out 141 batters. Paul has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 4th in wins! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Jose Vidro, Colorado's starting second baseman. He hit .416 with 30 RBI and slugged .730 in 89 at bats. CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Scott Podsednik suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Broken Knee was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Podsednik drove in 30 and scored 77 runs while batting .328 with 10 taters. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Thursday 6/30/2004: Darryl Kile pitches 1-hit shutout against Cleveland
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Darryl Kile is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cleveland found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Kile 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 19th shutouts in his career. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Kile (12-5) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 71 of 111 pitches for strikes. Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Chipper Jones went 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring three times and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Kile. Chicago (A) improved its record to 54-27, scoring 10 runs on 14 hits.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 86th time he has done it in his career. Lew Ford spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with two outs in the 5th inning. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Smoltz (13-1) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 108 pitches. Tim Naehring helped Smoltz at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. Atlanta scored 3 runs on 5 hits.

MONTREAL - When it rains, it pours. Montreal's lefty Randy Wolf will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 1st inning. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .253 against Randy this season. While posting an ERA of 5.79 he went 7-5 in 15 starts, fanning 55 and walking 37 hitters.

FLORIDA - Great days are rare. But not for Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Tom Gordon. Florida found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. MONTREAL - Montreal's season took a blow when Robert Fick suffered a serious injury in the game against Houston. He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Fick will probaby miss 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Wrist which will require surgery. Fick has walked 24 times this year and posts a .300 OBP. While batting .227, 63 for 277, he has driven in 35 runs.

NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander John Thomson will never forget this day. The 30-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Arizona on Sunday. Thomson (1-9) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Emil Brown helped Thomson at the plate, he finished 1 for 2, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 5-0.

'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' San Diego's shortstop Tadahito Iguchi stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Sheets. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Saturday 6/25/2004: Kansas City's Morris severely injured
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's ace Matt Morris suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Morris was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Bicep Muscle. This season Morris compiled an ERA of 3.33, going 2-1 in 5 starts. He fanned 23 while giving up 36 hits in 27 innings.
Friday 6/24/2004: Alex Rodriguez pounds three dingers
TEXAS - Alex Rodriguez was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered New York (A) to a 9-5 win over Texas by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Freddy Garcia in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A 460 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Freddy Garcia in the 3rd inning. In the 5th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Freddy Garcia. Alex collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three times and collecting 6 RBI. Shawn Wooten was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/23/2004.

MONTREAL - Montreal's season took a blow when Robert Fick suffered a serious injury in the game against Houston. He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Fick will probaby miss 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Wrist which will require surgery. Fick has walked 24 times this year and posts a .300 OBP. While batting .227, 63 for 277, he has driven in 35 runs.
Sunday 6/26/2004: John Thomson dominates Arizona, gives up just 2 hits
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander John Thomson will never forget this day. The 30-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Arizona on Sunday. Thomson (1-9) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Emil Brown helped Thomson at the plate, he finished 1 for 2, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Sunday 6/26/2004: Robb Nen dominates Cleveland, gives up just 2 hits
CLEVELAND - Minnesota's right-hander Robb Nen is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 29th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Nen (14-1) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 108 pitches. The hitting star for Minnesota was designated hitter Manny Ramirez, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting two dingers, hitting a double, scoring two runs and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Saturday 6/25/2004: Ben Sheets shuts out Florida on one hit
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Ben Sheets is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Florida on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. Sheets (11-5) struck out 8 and walked 1, throwing 67 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' San Diego's shortstop Tadahito Iguchi stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Sheets. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Saturday 6/25/2004: Kansas City's Morris severely injured
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's ace Matt Morris suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Morris was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Bicep Muscle. This season Morris compiled an ERA of 3.33, going 2-1 in 5 starts. He fanned 23 while giving up 36 hits in 27 innings.
Friday 6/24/2004: Alex Rodriguez pounds three dingers
TEXAS - Alex Rodriguez was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered New York (A) to a 9-5 win over Texas by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Freddy Garcia in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A 460 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Freddy Garcia in the 3rd inning. In the 5th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Freddy Garcia. Alex collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three times and collecting 6 RBI. Shawn Wooten was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/23/2004.
