Tuesday 7/12/2004: Chicago (A)'s Wilton Guerrero ropes six hits
LOS ANGELES (A) - Wilton Guerrero is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A RBI double off Brian Rose in the 3rd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. A two-run double off Carlton Loewer in the 4th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 7th inning he belted a RBI double off Mike R. Garcia. He collected singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) , in the 6th and in the 9th (two RBIs). Wilton did drive in 7 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 119 hits in 340 at bats, resulting in a .350 batting average. The final score of the game was 18-1.
Monday 7/11/2004: Kansas City's Gonzalez wins Player of the Week award
Kansas City's shortstop Alex S. Gonzalez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .435 and hit .381, while driving in 8 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Gonzalez has walked 28 times this year and posts a .333 OBP. While batting .269, 82 for 305, he has driven in 47 runs. Miguel Ojeda wins his 1st Player of the Week award. Sunday 7/10/2004: Bud Smith quiets Los Angeles (N) bats with shutout
HOUSTON - Bud Smith had some fun again. Los Angeles (N) hitters did not. Houston's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 48 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Smith (9-5) struck out 3 and walked none, throwing 61 of 88 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Houston was first baseman Jeff Bagwell, he went 3 for 3, stroking two 2B's, scoring two runs with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Friday 7/8/2004: Cleveland's Hanley Ramirez mashes five hits
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's first baseman Hanley Ramirez once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Tampa Bay's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Friday. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Cliff Brantley. The game was tied, 1-1, after the blast. A 442 foot drive to center field marked his 4th hit, a three-run homerun off Wayne Franklin in the 6th inning. He had singles in the 2nd inning , in the 4th (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . Hanley scored 2 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He now has a total of 74 hits this season, accounting for a .277 batting average. The final score of the game was 9-7.
Thursday 7/7/2004: Cleveland's Grilli out for 5-6 weeks
CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's right-hander Jason Grilli will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 8th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Elbow Ligament. His ERA of 4.66 helped him to a 2-2 record this year. He struck out 22 and walked 32 in 63.2 innings.
Thursday 7/7/2004: Chipper Jones (CHA) will miss full season
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s third baseman Chipper Jones will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Chicago (A) and Toronto. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Jones collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field.
