OAKLAND - Great days are rare. But not for Minnesota's right-hander Carl Pavano. Oakland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Pavano (11-3) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 95 pitches for strikes. Jose Offerman helped Pavano at the plate, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Monday 7/18/2004: Hideo Nomo pitches 2-hit shutout against Toronto
TORONTO - Hideo Nomo took the mound and never left. And Toronto hitters couldn't touch him at all. New York (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 26 career shutouts in 339 games started. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Nomo (12-1) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 111 pitches. The hitting star for New York (A) was catcher Eric Munson, he finished 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. New York (A) improved its record to 63-30, scoring 5 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 7/18/2004: Chicago (N)'s Alfonzo wins Player of the Week award
Mike Sweeney wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Sweeney helped his team with an average of .400 and 9 RBI in 20 at bats. His season numbers are: .238 AVG, 70 hits, 26 doubles, no triples and 13 taters, along with 49 RBI and 42 runs scored. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Edgardo Alfonzo, Chicago (N)'s starting second baseman. Edgardo was on fire, hitting .545 with 4 HR and 8 RBI.
Sunday 7/17/2004: Manny Ramirez stars with 2000th career hit
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's players had every reason to congratulate Manny Ramirez, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! In 11 years of big league action so far, Manny has compiled a batting average of .311, along with 380 homeruns and 1295 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' His hit in the 4th inning was a single off Cory Lidle.
Saturday 7/16/2004: Florida's Ohka out for full season
FLORIDA - Florida's right-hander Tomo Ohka experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 2nd inning of the game against Arizona, Ohka complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Ohka compiled an ERA of 5.01, going 5-10 in 17 starts. He fanned 64 while giving up 115 hits in 93.1 innings.
Friday 7/15/2004: New York (A)'s Suzuki severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s rightfielder Ichiro Suzuki suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Knee. Surgery will be performed next week. Ichiro is hitting .251 this year, with 87 hits in 346 at bats. He has driven in 28 runs, slugging .321.

BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Carlos Zambrano will never forget this day. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Tampa Bay on Thursday. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Zambrano (5-1) fanned 9 and walked 3, throwing 126 pitches. Boston's Boston improved its record to 39-50, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits.
