Monday 8/8/2004: Molina and Smoltz win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Bengie Molina, Detroit's starting catcher. He hit .619 with 10 RBI and slugged .905 in 21 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .440, Bengie hit .379 and slugged .550. He has collected 74 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the American League in batting! The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's John Smoltz, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. John went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56, while fanning 26 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Friday 8/5/2004: Mark Loretta blisters three bombs
DETROIT - Mark Loretta can hit'em a long way, and Texas pitchers couldn't smile about that today. Detroit's shortstop unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Freddy Garcia in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in left field. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 407 feet, cleared the wall in center field. His 3rd shot, off Freddy Garcia in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. Overall he collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and collecting 4 RBI. In 4145 career at bats, he has hit 243 homeruns and collected 808 RBI. On 7/29/2004, Miguel Cabrera was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. Detroit scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 8/1/2004: Atlanta's Abbott wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's first baseman Miguel Cabrera had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .500 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.208 in 24 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Cabrera has walked 34 times this year and posts a .364 OBP. While batting .303, 119 for 393, he has driven in 66 runs. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Jim Abbott this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Jim went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 5 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! Opposing players hit .224 against Jim this season. While posting an ERA of 2.23 he went 7-3 in 11 starts, fanning 38 and walking 19 hitters. Jim has pitched 3 shutouts and 7 complete games.

He struck out 25 in 34 innings. Darryl also fired a shutout. This season Kile compiled an ERA of 1.92, going 15-6 in 21 starts. He fanned 136 while giving up 86 hits in 163.2 innings. He has 7 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Florida's pitcher Adam Eaton is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. He had an ERA of just 0.73 in 37 innings of work in which he struck out 32 hitters. His record in July is 5-0. Adam fired two shutouts! It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Detroit's leftfielder Henry A. Rodriguez. Henry A. went 37 for 95 (.389), while hitting 8 HR and collecting 26 RBI. His season features a batting average of .279 (112 hits in 402 AB), 23 doubles, one triple and 21 homeruns. Rodriguez collected 71 RBI and 63 runs as well. Florida's centerfielder Carl Everett had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Carl was on fire, hitting .375 with 9 homeruns and 28 RBI. This year Everett drove in 70 and scored 63 runs while batting .258 with 25 longballs.
