Monday 8/15/2004: Atlanta's Obando wins Player of the Week award
It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Seattle's shortstop Mike B. Young. He hit .636 with 6 RBI and slugged 1.182 in 22 at bats. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's leftfielder Sherman Obando. Obando helped his team with an average of .393 and 15 RBI in 28 at bats.
Saturday 8/13/2004: Andy Pettitte pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
KANSAS CITY - Andy Pettitte took the mound and never left. And Detroit hitters couldn't touch him at all. Kansas City's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 10 career shutouts in 318 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Pettitte (12-6) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 73 of 113 pitches for strikes. Jason Giambi provided Kansas City with the offense Pettitte needed as he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, with 2 RBI. Kansas City scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
Friday 8/12/2004: Mike B. Young pounds three dingers
MINNESOTA - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Seattle's shortstop Mike B. Young accomplished that feat in a 8-4 win over Minnesota. His 1st shot, off Mark Buehrle in the 4th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Mark Buehrle in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 371 feet from home plate. In the 8th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Mark Buehrle. Mike B. collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and driving in 4 runs.
Thursday 8/11/2004: Sherman Obando clubs three rockets
COLORADO - Sherman Obando beat Colorado, but he did it without mercy, playing like a one man wrecking crew. Atlanta's leftfielder slugged three homeruns, once again proving that he is among the elite sluggers. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Carlos Almanzar in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 357 feet from home plate. In the 7th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Micah Bowie. A 376 foot drive to left-center marked his 3rd bomb, a two-run homerun off Bobby Chouinard in the 8th inning. Sherman stroked 4 hits in 6 AB, stroking a double, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 7 RBI. In 3084 career at bats, he has hit 126 homeruns and collected 450 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 80-36, scoring 23 runs on 27 hits.
Thursday 8/11/2004: Ryan Freel out for 6 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, shortstop Ryan Freel, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. Torn Abdominal Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Freel has walked 38 times this year and posts a .331 OBP. While batting .249, 105 for 421, he has driven in 39 runs.
Monday 8/8/2004: Darren Oliver fires 1-hitter against San Diego
COLORADO - Great days are rare. But not for Colorado's left-hander Darren Oliver. San Diego found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Oliver (13-5) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 103 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Colorado's rightfielder Alex Rios finished 2 for 3, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Oliver. The final score of the game was 6-0.
