Don was drafted in 1st round, 15th overall pick, by Atlanta in 1976. A guy with phenomenal skill, but was never a guy that could stand on the mound and just throw the ball past ya. He ended up with over 2000 strikeouts, but his high water mark for a season was only 160, and that was one of two seasons he had more than 150.
In 1980 Don was brought up and Earned first career win on April 5th, and also won Rookie of the Year Award going 18-10, 3.11 ERA.
In 1981 he won a World Series with Atlanta.
The rest of the early 80’s was quite for Don and then in 1985 he won Pitcher of the Month award on Oct 1st going 4-0 with a 1.15 era, which lead to his only Cy Young Award going 24-5, 1.68 ERA.
Was selected to the 1986 Allstar game.
In 1987 he won Pitcher of the Month award on 7/1, Player of the Week award on 7/25, and Player of the Week award on 8/15.
1988 came and he was selected to the Allstar game, and went on to win the World Series with Atlanta.
He pitched a PERFECT GAME against Cincinnati on 5/7 and won Pitcher of the Month award on 8/1 to complete his 1992 highlights.
in 93 and 94 he won a Pitcher of the Month award, once for each season, and also in 94 he was selected to the Allstar game.
1996 and he was selected to the Allstar game, and won the World Series with Atlanta again.
In 1997 he won World Series with Atlanta for the 4th time in his career, capping off the highlights of his career.
Don is in the top 15 all time for lowest ERA ever, one of 6 current and past Braves players to be in the top 15. He finished 4 games shy of 300 wins, but should still be able to be voted into the hall of fame once his class comes up for a vote. At the time he retired he was in the top 25 all time for complete game shutouts.
Don will always be fondly remembered as one of the greats to wear a Braves uniform.
