Thursday 9/15/2004: Matt Stairs clubs five hits in a game
SEATTLE - Matt Stairs hits 'em where they ain't. Oakland certainly agrees as Seattle's first baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A pitch from Alan Embree in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 342 feet from home plate in left field. A pitch from Mike Myers in the 5th inning left his bat for a two-run double. The game was tied, 9-9, after the blast. His 5th hit, off Scott Stewart in the 9th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. He collected singles in the 3rd inning and in the 8th inning . Matt scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 167 hits in 516 at bats, resulting in a .324 batting average. Seattle improved its record to 96-52, scoring 18 runs on 20 hits.
Monday 9/12/2004: Player of the Week honors go to Ventura and Everett
Detroit's third baseman Robin Ventura had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Ventura helped his team with an average of .625 and 6 RBI in 24 at bats. Carl Everett from Florida wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Carl went 10 for 27 (.370), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 12 RBI. He now has homered in 5 consecutive games as well! Everett has walked 53 times this year and posts a .341 OBP. While batting .259, 127 for 491, he has driven in 96 runs.
Sunday 9/11/2004: New York (A)'s Worrell out for 6 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Tim Worrell suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Oakland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. New York (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Worrell had suffered a Torn Bicep Muscle. In 30 starts this year Tim struck out 204 batters in 205 innings of work. His ERA is 3.25, his record 15-10. Tim has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games.
Saturday 9/10/2004: Andy Pettitte out for 4-5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its left-hander Andy Pettitte for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Joe Borchard in a game against Los Angeles (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 3.53 helped him to a 14-7 record this year. He struck out 145 and walked 70 in 204 innings. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts.
Thursday 9/8/2004: Baltimore's Wood severely injured
BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's ace Kerry Wood will not pitch for at least 4 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Minnesota where he left the field in the 4th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Tricep Tendon. In 29 starts this year Kerry struck out 246 batters in 209 innings of work. His ERA is 2.63, his record 16-7. Kerry has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 9th in wins!
