Wednesday 9/21/2004: Paul McClellan turns in great performance against San Francisco
ATLANTA - Paul McClellan took the mound and never left. And San Francisco hitters couldn't touch him at all. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 29 career shutouts in 408 games started. With two outs in the 9th inning Deion Sanders singled to break up the no-hitter. McClellan (23-8) was really unbelievable, striking out 17 and walking none, throwing 77 of 113 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' The hitting star for Atlanta was leftfielder Sherman Obando, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Wednesday 9/21/2004: Carlos Perez shuts out Milwaukee on one hit
MILWAUKEE - Great days are rare. But not for Colorado's left-hander Carlos Perez. Milwaukee found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. Perez (14-12) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 65 of 102 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' The hitting star for Colorado was shortstop Brian Roberts, he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a double, and driving in 3 runs. Colorado scored 9 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 9/21/2004: Derek Lowe blanks Tampa Bay with a 1-hitter
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Derek Lowe is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Tampa Bay on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. Lowe (20-7) fanned 1 and walked 2, throwing 87 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Hideki Matsui helped Lowe at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, and collecting 5 RBI. CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Juan Pierre suffered a season ending injury when he was struck by a pitch from New York (A)'s Roy Oswalt. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Broken Wrist was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season numbers are: .314 AVG, 175 hits, 30 doubles, 8 triples and 3 longballs, along with 66 RBI and 97 runs scored.

BALTIMORE - Derrek Lee was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Baltimore to a 5-1 win over Oakland by homering three times. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Wandy Rodriguez in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd shot, off Wandy Rodriguez in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. NEW YORK (A) - When it rains, it pours. New York (A)'s ace Hector Fajardo will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles (A) where he left the field in the 5th inning. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .296 against Hector this season. While posting an ERA of 4.73 he went 13-10 in 32 starts, fanning 227 and walking 36 hitters. Hector has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Monday 9/19/2004: Chicago (N)'s Giles wins Player of the Week award
Matt Stairs wins his 15th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Stairs helped his team with an average of .682 and 9 RBI in 22 at bats. Stairs has walked 50 times this year and posts a .391 OBP. While batting .328, 172 for 525, he has driven in 115 runs. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 6th in RBI! Brian S. Giles from Chicago (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Brian S. went 13 for 24 (.542), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 13 RBI.

NEW YORK (N) - Richie Sexson was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered New York (N) to a 10-0 win over Milwaukee by homering three times. A pitch from Juan Alvarez in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 378 feet from home plate in right field. His 2nd shot, off Juan Alvarez in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Saturday 9/17/2004: Shawn Wooten ropes five hits, completes cycle
LOS ANGELES (A) - Texas' catcher Shawn Wooten once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Los Angeles (A)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Saturday. In the 2nd inning he belted a double off Brian Rose. A single in the 3rd off Carlton Loewer accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd cleared the based, a three-run double off Carlton Loewer in the 4th inning. In the 8th inning he unloaded a RBI triple off David Riske. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off David Riske in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 433 feet from home plate. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Shawn did drive in 6 while scoring 5 runs on his own. He is hitting .257 this season, with 25 HR and 72 RBI.
