Saturday 10/1/2004: New York (N)'s Cornejo named Pitcher of the Month
Texas' Chris Capuano had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 4-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 1.49. He struck out 47 in 36.1 innings. This season Capuano compiled an ERA of 2.76, going 13-7 in 31 starts. He fanned 229 while giving up 175 hits in 205.2 innings. Nate Cornejo couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 0.54 in 50.1 innings of work in which he struck out 43 hitters. His record in September is 3-3. Nate pitched THREE complete game shutouts! This season Cornejo compiled an ERA of 2.86, going 14-21 in 35 starts. He fanned 217 while giving up 243 hits in 270.2 innings. Nate has pitched 6 shutouts and 14 complete games.

Minnesota's designated hitter Manny Ramirez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. In 90 at bats he hit .444 with 9 HR and 37 RBI. His season features a batting average of .347 (209 hits in 602 AB), 48 doubles, 3 triples and 45 longballs. Ramirez collected 147 RBI and 115 runs as well. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Shawn Green, Cincinnati's starting first baseman. Shawn went 37 for 115 (.322), while hitting 13 HR and collecting 32 RBI. His season numbers are: .272 AVG, 136 hits, 35 doubles, 5 triples and 35 longballs, along with 89 RBI and 105 runs scored.
Friday 9/30/2004: Bernie F. Williams stars with 3000th career hit
OAKLAND - Bernie F. Williams got a standing ovation from 21481 fans in Oakland, who witnessed his 3000th career hit. He hit a single in the 1st off Randy Tomlin for number 3000. In 15 years of big league action so far, Bernie F. has compiled a batting average of .315, along with 430 homeruns and 1838 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
Monday 9/26/2004: Player of the Week honors go to Burrell and Granderson
Oakland's centerfielder Pat Burrell had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Burrell helped his team with an average of .667 and 9 RBI in 24 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Diego's Curtis Granderson this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Curtis went 13 for 34 (.382), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 8 RBI.
Sunday 9/25/2004: Darren Dreifort out for 7 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Darren Dreifort suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Philadelphia he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Tricep Muscle. In 33 starts this year Darren struck out 285 batters in 214.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.89, his record 19-7. Darren has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
Saturday 9/24/2004: Albert Belle homers three times against Detroit
DETROIT - Old men can't play baseball? Tell that to Albert Belle who tonight defied logic, and slammed three jacks. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Joe Beimel. Number 2 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 410 feet, cleared the wall in center field. A pitch from Alberto Reyes in the 8th inning left his bat for a GRAND SLAM, landing 442 feet from home plate in left-center. Albert got 3 hits in 5 AB, with three runs scored and collecting 9 RBI. So far this season he is batting .239 with 17 homers and 71 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! On 9/21/2004, Derrek Lee was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. New York (A) improved its record to 99-58, scoring 14 runs on 12 hits.
